Early EU Christmas thanks to Santa Klaus

The Tories and UKIP will not be agreeing but many in Europe will be very happy that President Klaus of the Czech Republic has at last signed the Lisbon Treaty. This means it has now been ratified by all 27 EU States and in accordance with its wording, comes into force on the 1st day of the next month, so on 1st December 2009.

At last the EU, now consisting of 27 States, will have internal regulations needed for an organisation of that size. The current rules, pre-Lisbon, have become increasingly unworkable.

So whilst the UK's Tories and UKIP will undoubtedly not agree, President Klaus has given Europe an early Christmas present.

The European Union is the best thing ever to have happened to Europe. It has created a stabitity that has never been known before. As I write this it is Armistice Sunday, and the UK is remembering its dead in two World Wars, etc.. What it is not doing is remembering its dead in the 3rd World War and the 4th World War, thanks to the stability created initially by the Treaty of Rome back in 1956.

UKIP in particular complain about all the regulation coming from "Brussels", but they neglect to tell us that most of the legislation, passed by common consent, is trade regulation ..... setting common standards of what consumers across Europe are to expect. The fact that there are then common regulations throughout the EU means that manufacturers etc have not got to design goods or services in up to 27 different ways.

Even if UKIP were, heaven forbid, ever to take us out of the EU, they would still need to pass all those common regulations as UK legislation, in order to permit UK manufacturers etc to continue to export to the EU. Failure to do so would cause emmense damage to the UK's economy.

My opinion? Thanks again President Klaus! Thanks for the early Christmas present!
